2014 Support
Dear Friend,
Have you ever wanted to change the world? Let me tell you a story:
Years ago, I sat in my college apartment and wondered What is an 'ensemble'? What if we created an ensemble who loved each other and invested in each other for life? What if we grew our theatre in a culturally under-served neighborhood? Ten years and fifty plays after building The Gift on Chicago's northwest side, our success has ignited a pioneering spirit; both Filament Theatre and the Chicago Fringe Festival have since made their homes here while our neighbors at The Gale Street Inn, Fischman Liquors, and The Portage Restaurant are adventurously experimenting with craft beers and inspired menus. There is a cultural revolution happening and The Gift fired its first cannon shot. Recently, The Sun-Times printed a story anointing Jeff Park as Chicago's next theatre district.
There is no other Chicago theatre quite like The Gift; as proud members of Actors' Equity Association, The Gift is a union theatre which means we take care of our ensemble through better compensation than most storefront theatres as well as contributing to pension and health benefits. But with only forty seats and trying to keep our ticket prices low, being a union theatre at our size is virtually unheard of because it is so challenging. But to us, investing in each other for life must also mean taking care of each other no matter what the cost. We can afford to hold this belief because of you. Long before we even built our first set, we began with the belief that someday we'd find Youour ideal audience member who believes every great story is a love story, that art should be for all, and that what happens in a theatre can change lives.
I'm not here to merely give you plays. The Gift's mission is larger and more comprehensive than that. I'm asking you to play a leading role in our cultural revolution by supporting the twenty-three ensemble members who give everything they haveevery rehearsal, every performancein order to give you experiences which are priceless. Your gift will empower us to compensate our ensemble fairly, to afford healthy rehearsal processes, nurture new writers, new plays, and the next generation of dreamers through our high school training program, "giftED." I'm here to give you The Gift, the story of a little theatre with a giant heart and enormous dreams.
Have you ever wanted to change the world? We know the feeling.
Come change it with us.
