Science: Curtis Ebbesmeyer: Floating World
When Seattle oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer combs a beach, he's not just looking for souvenirs -- he's looking for science. By tracking the paths of washed-up sneakers, rubber duckies and other random flotsam, Ebbesmeyer himself has ridden a wave of notoriety en route to revolutionizing the science of chaotic ocean currents. In his new book, Flotsametrics and the Floating World (co-written by Seattle Metropolitan news editor Eric Scigliano), Ebbesmeyer details his struggle to solve the mysteries of the seas, sharing surprising discoveries and changing the worldview of trash, the ocean and our global environment. This is likely to be a big draw: Ebbesmeyer is not only in demand by international corporations and research expeditions; he's also such a popular science star that he once appeared in People magazine. Presented as part of Seattle Science Lectures, with Elliott Bay Book Company, Puget Soundkeepers and People for Puget Sound.
