Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
"This is an epic romp," says Joey Pipia, the director of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Tom Stoppards brilliantly funny play that runs at The Chameleon Theater in Port Townsend, Friday March 13 to Sunday March 29.
The play is the flip side of the play Hamlet; a parallel world in which Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (minor roles in the play Hamlet) are the main focus, while Hamlet and the court come and go in supporting roles.
The comedy follows the misadventures of these two hapless characters reminiscent of the two buffoons from Waiting for Godot. As Rosencrantz and Guildenstern rush to find out where they are, what they are doing, and why they have been sent for, they move headlong toward a certain fate.
In their path are the nimble and astonishing Tragedians, a traveling band of performers led by an imposing leader who knows more than he is willing to say.
Set design is by Joey Pipia, original music created and performed by Kristin and Otto Smith, costume design from theater guru Sophie Pipia whose patterns for the costumes come from clothing on Elizabethans whose bodies were exhumed after their graves were robbed.
The direction is by Joey Pipia, whose last play, Shakespeare in the Dark: An Improvised Tragedy was hailed as an amazing miracle.
