Coppelia 2023 - Ramon Moreno School of Ballet's Spring Show
Coppélia is a classical ballet based on the story Der Sandmann (The Sandman) that was originally published in 1815. The ballet version premiered in 1870 and has evolved from the way it is presented. It sometimes starred - in the late 18th and early 19th centuries- mechanical automatons in the show!
The story begins with a boy called Franz, who is engaged to Swanhilda. He catches a glimpse of Coppélia in the window of the house of a mad scientist called Dr. Coppelius, and falls madly in love with her! Swanhilda catches Franz blowing kisses at Coppélia and decides to impersonate her so she can win Franz back. Chaos and confusion ensues, aided by Dr. Coppélius (who is not unlike Uncle Drosselmeyer in The Nutcracker) and his absent-mindedness. But the confusion is soon resolved. Swanhilda and Franz get married, and the wedding is celebrated with many festive dances.
Join us for this fun show, with surprises thrown in for the audience in the intermission!
