Come join us in the culmination of a season of soaring song! The Calgary Boys' Choir, along with special guests 6 Minute Warning (http://www.6minutewarning.com), will send your spirit flying with a collection of modern and classical pieces about all things airborne. Musical highlights will include Mendelssohn's "O For the Wings of a Dove", a traditional First Nations' "Fly Like an Eagle", with drumming and choreography, "Be Like a Bird", by Edmonton composer Sheila Wright, a selection of Bob Chilcott arrangements, and Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly" with 6 Minute Warning.
Along with enjoying the music, there is also the opportunity to participate in a silent auction supporting and benefitting this leading choral program.
The Calgary Boys' Choir, as part of the Mount Royal Conservatory family of choirs, is a local tradition of excellence that has been recognized internationally, most recently in London and Canterbury Cathedral as part of the International Children's Choir Festival. Established in 1973, the award winning Calgary Boys' Choir celebrated its 40th Birthday in May 2013.
The singing voice of a well-trained boy has remarkable clarity and purity. The Calgary Boys' Choir combines the quality of boys' voices with what interests the boys.
A boys-only choir recognizes that boys learn differently. Parents and teachers know that boys enjoy movement, rhythm and humour. The conductors are specialists who know how to engage boys and make music fun.
The choir provides classical and contemporary vocal music education and performance opportunities for boys aged five to voice change. There are three levels of choir depending on the age and voice development of the chorister: the Young Singers, the Intermediate Choir and the Touring Choir. Increasing levels of skill in vocal technique, aural musicianship and sight-reading are developed in a supportive and fun environment with the pursuit of personal and team excellence.
Supported by highly-trained instructors, boys develop their musical and vocal talent, self-confidence, presentation skills and leadership abilities through performance-based activities which empower boys to be remarkable, expressive and creative citizens. The choir programs complement in-school music programs and the Alberta curriculum more than ever with the new "Sight Singing Samurai" course books (designed and developed for boys by artistic staff and alumni members)
The choir is committed to community involvement. All levels of the choir perform throughout the year in Calgary concert halls, churches, community centres and schools. The Touring Choir has performed at many major public events, including the 1988 Olympic Winter Games opening ceremonies, Calgary Flames hockey games, the Alberta Music Educator's conference and most recently singing Carmina Burana with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.
The Calgary Boys' Choir is part of the Mount Royal University Conservatory's choral program. This year the choir has also opened a second location to serve communities in the North West and North East at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Parish, 835 Northmount Drive.
We are always looking for new members. We welcome all boys with an interest in music and singing. No experience is required: the choir will provide experiences of a lifetime.
