On March 15, 2014, Bryce Dance Company will present To You, Around You, About You; a collaborative, multi-media dance performance piece that explores themes related to end of life - specifically of aging, memory, health, illness, loss, and death/transition. The work will be performed by fifteen Vermont-based movers from a variety of backgrounds and spanning a wide range of ages. The original sound score for the work was developed and will be performed live by NH based composer Jason Beaudreau. Lighting Design by Boston based designer Matthew Breton.
Founder and award-winning Artistic Director of Bryce Dance Company, Heather Bryce, will premiere her new solo - a work-in-progress titled Breathing Under Water.
Company member and guest choreographer, Susan Edwards, will premiere her new work Project X: The Change Experience. Project X was created in collaboration with the performers and involves movement, art, song, text and music. The piece provides a glimpse into life's roller coaster ride of changes.
Bryce Dance Company is an intergenerational, Burlington, VT-based performance company. We create collaborative, community-engaged work that reflects the stories and interests of individuals in the place in which the work is created. We believe that art is vital and transformative. Community engaged art has the power to break down barriers and bring people together. We frequently invite alternative populations (i.e.; elders, children, individuals without formal dance training) into the creation of new work in order to accurately reflect the experiences of individuals and to open dialogue.
To You, Around You, About You was originated by choreographers Heather Bryce and Kayla West and was supported in part by the Flynn Center Vermont Artists' Space Grant. Supporting Vermont artists and the creation of new work are integral parts of the Flynn Center's mission to build the artistic community in Vermont.
Bryce and West collaborated with the company members and the residents of an area Independent Living Facility in order to develop this evening length work. The creation of To You, Around You, About You involved oral history interviews and intensive collaboration with the company members and the residents of area Assisted Living facilities.
