Hexham Orpheus Choir will be performing Rossinis Petite Messe Solennelle, in the magnificent Hexham Abbey under the direction of Mark Edwards and accompanied by piano and harmonium. We welcome a wide audience from Northumberland, Newcastle, Tyneside and beyond to enjoy this uplifting work. Rossini composed the Petite Messe Solennelle in 1863, 34 years after writing his last opera, William Tell, whilst living on the outskirts of Paris where he spent the last decades of his life. First performed in March 1864, the unusual scoring for voices, piano and harmonium is in the Neapolitan harpsichord tradition of the 18th century. Three years later, Rossini discreetly orchestrated his mass, partly as he feared others would do it anyway. He requested permission from the Pope to perform it with female voices in a church and, when his request was rejected, he demanded that the orchestral version would only be performed after his death. The composer preferred the chamber music version anyway. Hexham Orpheus Choir is dedicated to performing and promoting access to classical music in the Tyne Valley. Based in Hexham we have around 85 members and always welcome new singers.
