Stages have been built across this country to showcase the beautiful artform of the Blues. When genre band Asamu Johnson & The Associates of The Blues step on one they uplift the rich, endearing heritage of the music along with the hearts and spirits of everyone listening.
For this group of 2-time West Michigan Blues Champions, keeping the Blues alive while making their fans smile and dance is, and will always be, an infinite victory. And that is alright.
Johnson and his group mates Adam "Daddy Mack" McMillian, CC Woods, Da'Veonce Washington, Mike Howe Sr., and Mike Howe Jr. are skilled, experienced musicians with captivating presence.
They've had all eyes and ears on them at venues and events across the nation including Chenango Blues Fest in NY, Teddy's Juke Joint in Baton Rouge, Pee Dee Blues Bash in SC, B.B. King's Blue Club in Memphis, Buddy Guy's Legends bar in Chicago, and ArtPrize WYCE Blue Bridge Music Fest in their native Grand Rapids, Ml.
Glowing under the brightest spotlights, Asa mu and The Associates claimed their two regional championships at the International Blues Festival in two consecutive years - 2016 and 2017. They
even opened for Blues legend Koko Taylor, another highlight on their list of remarkable accolades.
A passionate and thought-provoking songwriter, Johnson's 2017 hit song "Got To Go"- found on their acclaimed album Blues You Can Use, reached #1 on the POWER XR West Coast Radio Network.
The core of Asa mu Johnson & The Associates of The Blues is Johnson, McMillian and Woods. Them being close-knit works.
McMillian and Johnson met as teens in the 1970's. They played together in a band called The Funka Sonics and experienced regional success while opening for major acts The Temptations, Michael Naruto Walden, and Carl Carlton. Woods, a lift-long R&B musician, also met Johnson early on and was encouraged by him to continue playing.
McMillian left both the band and Ml in the 80's to pursue other opportunities in California. He returned to Ml in the 90's, reconnecting with Johnson to rekindle their musical chemistry.
Today Johnson, McMillian, Woods, and the rest of The Associates of The Blues are standout performers on whatever stage they're on. The rich, endearing heritage of Blues music stays alive and well in their hands. And that is alright.
