Shakespeare Wallah (1965), Oregon Sesquicentennial Film Festival
Shakespeare Wallah, dir. by James Ivory, 1965/India, 120 minutes
A shoestring budgeted feature shot in India using an all Indian crew, Shakespeare Wallah is about a traveling Shakespearean actress (Felicity Kendal) who falls in love with an Indian playboy. James Ivory met Kendal when he cast Shashi Kapoor, her Indian brother-in-law in his first film, The Householder. Struck by Kendals teenaged combination of beauty, talent, and intelligence, he developed his second feature film around the story of her life. It launched Ivorys career.
Brought up in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Ivory graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in architecture. His first film, for which he served as writer, director, producer, and cameraman, was about the beauty of Venice.
His first feature film, The Householder (1963), was his first collaboration with first time screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and first time producer Ismail Merchant. They made Shakespeare Wallah after that, and went on to make 20 films together. Ivory has received three Academy award nominations for Best Director, and has directed six Oscar nominated Best Actor/Actress performances.
