Broadway In The Works - 1000 Faces
The son of deaf parents, Lon Chaney marries 15-year old Cleva Creighton. They travel with their young son, working in vaudeville houses across the country where Cleva becomes a rising singing star. Their jealousies escalate, and in the heat of an argument Cleva attempts suicide by swallowing liquid mercury. She survives, but her voice is permanently damaged. The incident causes such a scandal that Lon can no longer work in theater, and he turns to silent films in Hollywood. His pioneering use of make-up, incredible physicality, and compassion for grotesque and flawed characters, lead him to create some of the most iconic film performances everincluding the original Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera. Now divorced, Cleva returns, causing a rift between Lon and his son, Creighton, who is becoming a young man. (Creighton will later become an actor, taking the name Lon Chaney, Jr.) One of the last holdouts in silent film, Lon makes his first talkie, which is a huge success. A film legend, Lon Chaney dies just six weeks later, but his legacy continues to grow today.
