For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf
Mixed Magic Theatre is proud to present Ntozake Shange's Award-Winning Play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf." Directed by Jackie Davis, For Colored Girls is a series of 20 poems, collectively called a "choreopoem." It was first shown in 1975 and has since become an African American theatre classic. It has been a Hollywood film and both an Broadway and off-Broadway production. Shange's poetry expresses many struggles and obstacles that African-American women may face throughout their lives with a cast of seven women. The characters representing different colors of the rainbow, including brown, address and tell stories through dance, songs and poems that deal with love, abandonment, rape, and abortion. The play brings together all of the women for "a laying on of hands," which in the end Shange evokes the power of womanhood.
