How Not to Make a Short Film with Roberta Munroe
HOW NOT TO MAKE A SHORT FILM with Roberta Munroe
Presented by DCTV & Shooting People

Monday, March 30th, 7:30pm
DCTV, 87 Lafayette Street, NYC

Does your protagonist drive down a foggy road, all of a sudden seeing a child in a white nightgown who mysteriously disappears on the reverse shot? Is there a close-up of a clock ticking? Are there four guys driving to Vegas and one of them accidentally dies? Do you have a character in a bathtub just under the water?

Dont do it people!

Join us, as Roberta Munroe, author of How Not to Make a Short Film: Secrets from a Sundance Programmer, dispels the mystery of making short films and guides us through the madness of production for both narrative and documentary, from funding and casting to festival and distribution strategy.

In a media world that is increasingly oriented towards the short film format, including online and mobile content, How Not to Make a Short Film is soon to become a must-have resource, and Munroe, who seems to have been born a film festival programmer, the perfect guide.

About Roberta Munroe:
Roberta Marie Munroe is an award-winning filmmaker (Dani and Alice and Happy Birthday), writer, entrepreneur, international short film festival programmer, consultant and now published author. After five very successful years as the Short Film Programmer at The Sundance Film Festival, Munroe was instrumental in launching The Blackhouse Foundation, which supports African American filmmakers, and served as their founding Artistic Director. Now Munroe continues to work with short form filmmakers, mentoring high school graduates at Innercity Filmmakers, and as the president and senior consultant of her LA based independent filmmaker company, RMM Film Consulting.

Praise for How Not To Make a Short Film:
"While no expert can ever know anything truly...Roberta is the only writer who's ever addressed what not to do creatively, what to do practically, and how to execute it. So read the book and go make a short that just might find its way into the Sundance catalog."
-From the foreword, Tom Quinn, Magnolia Pictures

Roberta Munroe's advice and insights on our project were invaluable to its success from its premiere at Sundance Film Festival and beyond. It is exciting to think that all filmmakers will have access to her incredible mind and experience through this book.
-Tiffany Shlain, Award-winning Director/Producer/Writer
The Tribe, the #1 downloaded short film on iTunes
Founder of The Webby Awards

"She is that rare person in the film world who can not only recognize an inspired, great film, but actually help you make one."
-Mark Duplass, Sundance and SXSW award-winning filmmaker
