Music From Two Hemispheres
Crescendo presents: Sacred Choral Music from Two Hemispheres - Scandinavian-American a Cappella Works and a Latin American Mass, featuring contemporary sacred choral works by the Norwegian, New Yorkbased composer Ola Gjeilo, and the US premiere of a 20th-century Latin American mass Misa Andinaby the Chilean composer Jaime Soto. Gjeilo moved to the United States in 2001 to begin his composition studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. His concert works are performed all over the world. Gjeilo's choral works have quickly become very well known in the US and are being performed and recorded. The meditative character and contemporary tonality of his a cappella pieces on our program stand in contrast to the bright, rhythmical sounds of Soto's Misa Andina. For this work, Crescendo Chorus and Latin American soloists will be joined by an ensemble of Andean folk instruments, led by the well-known Alturas Duo. The Misa Andina combines traditional Catholic elements with Chilean folklore. Composed in 1980, it has been performed in several European Asian and Latin American countries and for special occasions, such as a ceremony for the king of Spain. Jaime Soto is a professor and the founder and director of the ensemble Barroco Andino. Founded in 1974, this group creates a fusion of Western European Music (Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, George Frideric Handel, among others) and the (folklore) sounds of Chile and Latin America. Soto's works range from theater and movie music to pieces for vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the Ortiga Group.
