F3 - Fullerton Film Festival - Annie Hall
Annie Hall USA 1977. 93 min. Director: Woody Allen
This four-time Academy Award winner (Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture) from director-actor-co-writer Woody Allen is the quintessential modern romantic comedy. With equal parts of melancholy and fabulously witty one liners, ANNIE HALL had not only an incredible influence on modern cinema but also on fashion. Designer Ralph Lauren dressed Diane Keaton in a style - layers with a man's tie - that she remains synonymous with almost 30 years later. The film is a story of contemporary love and urban relationships that explores the interaction of two people doomed to never quite get it together over a period of several years. Alvy Singer (Allen) is a comedian obsessed with death attempting to have a relationship with an equally-insecure, shy, flighty Midwestern WASP female (Keaton). Always thought to be semi-autobiographical, ANNIE HALL is, at its core, about an inept, angst-ridden, pessimistic, Brooklyn-born Jewish stand-up comedian - Allen started out as a joke writer on The Tonight Show - who experiences crises related to his relationships and family. It is interesting to note that Allen and Keaton had a real-life relationship and breakup in the early 1970s and Keaton's birth name was Diane Hall; her nickname, Annie. See how many now famous names you can spot in party scenes or walk on roles.
