F3 - Fullerton Film Festival - Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?
Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? USA, 1967. 108 min. Director: Stanley Kramer
This 1967 groundbreaking two-time Academy Award winning film (Best Actress for Hepburn and Best Screenplay for screenwriter William Rose) deals with the controversial subject of interracial marriage which, at the time the film was released, was still for all intents and purposes illegal in several U.S. states. The story centers on Joanna Drayton (Houghton), a young white liberal upper class woman who after a whirlwind romance in Hawaii with Dr. Prentice (Poitier) who is an African American returns home to tell her parents that the two plan to marry. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn play Joanna's parents whose "liberal" attitudes about race, class and love are challenged. The emotional closing monologue delivered by Tracy turned out to be the last scene ever played by the film luminary, who died one week after shooting wrapped. Hepburn never saw the completed film because she said the memories of Tracy were too painful. The film also stars Roy Glenn and Beah Richards (who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress) as Mr. And Mrs. Prentice. In 1998, the American Film Institute rated GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER as number 99 in its list of the 100 Greatest Movies of the past 100 years.
