Sour Sunday
Join us on February 9th as we attempt to pucker punch your palate with four of Cascades awesome sours. The following beers will be flowing:
Strawberry: This NW style sour is a crisp, refreshing wheat beer that was barrel-aged for seven months then additionaly aged with strawberries for another eight months. Bright, sweet strawberries and light candy notes greet you in the nose. A light tartness and berry sweetness intermingle on the palate, giving way to a light, sparkling fresh berry tartness in the finish. It is better as a breakfast beer or a dessert? You decide.
The Vine: This NW style sour ale is a blend of blond and wheat ales that were barrel aged for up to 12 months before aging on fresh pressed white grape must for an additional three months. The beer spent more than six months of lactic fermentation and aging in small oak barrels. Blending and souring three or four varieties of ale and then further barrel-fermenting with the juice from white wine grapes is what I'd call a pretty high-risk/high-reward experiment - Cascade hit the jackpot.
Kriek: Kriek spends over six months in lactic fermentation and aging in oak barrels. This NW style sour red ale is fermented for eight months with fresh whole Bing and sour pie cherries. Those who have had it will know that it's very sour and aggressive. Actually when I had it before, I thought my tongue and tooth enamel were dissolving with every sip.
Apricot: Brewmaster Ron Gansberg based this Apricot Ale on a Belgian Tripel, putting it through 16 months lactic fermentation and aging in French oak wine barrels. The apricots were allowed to slowly ripen before introduction into the beer; the beer then aged another four months on the fruit before bottling. The taste hits you right away with a big sour kick in the teeth. A sharp lemon bite leads off, followed by some sour green apple and a ton of lactic sourness. There's a big hit of dryness near the finish that seems to suck all of the moisture straight from your mouth. Once that fades, you get the actual finish, which is smoother and sweeter, bringing apricot preserves, underripe red cherry and some oak. This beer is insane.
These four beers will be paired with four cheeses expertly picked by our cheese monger for a palate pleasing pucker party!
