Academy Concerts presents Harlem Stride piano virtuoso Tom Roberts
Tom Roberts will amaze, entertain, and enlighten you with a tour-de-force of the historical art form of Harlem Stride piano, the virtuoso successor to ragtime. Developed in New York's Harlem neighborhood in the 1920s, it took the "striding" left hand of ragtime - a bass note on the beat and a higher-pitched chord on the offbeat - and made it faster, combined with more quick decorative notes n the right hand. Tom will play music of the great artists of the day: James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Charles "Luckey" Roberts, and Willie "The Lion" Smith. Tom has performed this repertoire at the prestigious 92nd street Y and twice at the International Stride Piano Summit in Zurich, Switzerland.
You don't want to miss this opportunity to experience great American music!
