Relgion And Violence -- Adam benShea

Various religions have condoned, motivated and justified violence throughout history to the present day. In this course we will explore the relationship between religion and violence. The goal is to understand how religious arguments are used to justify violent actors and action.
This lecture will provide an overview of this instructor's course at Cal Poly. Mr. BenShea will describe fundamentalism and discuss some of the central themes related to that concept. He will explain the process that causes someone to go from being a fundamentalist to becoming a religious extremist. Your instructor will also share some of the important features of religious extremism:
Historical and contemporary case studies of how various religions have condoned, motivated and justified violence
The place of sacrifice, martyrdom, self-injury and forced conversion in religious doctrines
Representations of religious violence in the media
Adam benShea is a lecturer in the Philosophy Department at Cal Poly. He graduated magna cum laude from UC Santa Barbara with a BA in Religious Studies, received his MA in Near Eastern Languages & Cultures from Indiana University, and his PhD in Religion from Emory University. He has taught courses in Introduction to Islam; Introduction to Judaism; World Religions; History of the Middle East (Ancient, Medieval and Modern); Life of Muhammad: Islam and Politics: Arab/Israeli Conflict; Comparative Sacred Texts; The Quran; Religion and Violence: Religion and Society.
