Discovering a Musical Heartland: Wu Man's Return to China, The Liu Fang Yuan Musician-in-Residence at The Huntington
Join us for an evening with Wu Man as she discusses the pipa, Chinese traditional music, and the life of musicians in remote areas of China. In this lecture, she will share the documentary film she created to record the fast disappearing music traditions in rural China. She will also introduce the theme and theory of the commissioned music she will create for Liu Fang Yuan.
About the residency: The Huntington is pleased to announce the first Musician-in-Residence program inspired by the Chinese garden Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance. The internationally acclaimed artist and Musical America's 2013 Instrumentalist of the Year, Wu Man, will be The Huntington's first Musician-in-Residence. Known for her distinguished career as a pipa virtuoso, Wu Man has performed with many other innovative artists, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet. For The Huntington Residency, Ms. Wu will present a series of public concerts, lectures, and school outreach during the spring of 2014. The final concert will be Ms Wu's world premiere of a work that she will compose for The Huntington as part of the Residency.
