Voiceweaving Workshop w/ Robin Chilstrom
What is Voiceweaving? Voiceweaving is an open-hearted singing practice: body-based, playful, and pleasurable. It's a legacy from our ancestors, evolving from what is perhaps the first human language: pure sound. Everyone can join in by following a simple set of sound-games created for individuals, couples and small groups. The flow of exercises guide singers through a progression of improvisational techniques that invite self-expression, group creativity and the development of chant-songs.
What to Bring Individual sounding may be done sitting (or lying) on the floor, sitting in a chair or standing. If you'd like to use the floor, you may want to bring a yoga mat for comfort. A carafe of water will be available.
Workshop - What will happen? First we'll relax into spontaneous, full-body sounding as a group. Then we'll explore indvidually and in playful dialogue with partners. By listening and responding to our partners with curiosity, singers will enter a flow of wordless communication that becomes circular and deeply engaging. From these sound dialogues, musical phrases will emerge. Singers will work with cues to begin shaping the musical phrases into rhythmic, melodic patterns (Ostenati); then we'll begin layering these patterns to create harmonies. Next we'll come together as a group to practice simple ways of layering and varying these musical phrases to create chant-songs. This requires deep listening and a willingness to engage collaboratively. Unique to each group, chant-songs are spontaneously composed and are often rhythmically and melodically complex. These songs "of the moment" are created from the energy flowing between us, through which we open our hearts to one another. If time permits, we'll create a final chant-song with words.
About Robin A multi-disciplinary artist, Robin worked for three decades in regional theater as a performing artist, musician and designer. In 2003 she co-founded Earth Arts NW with the Earth and Spirit Council. During Earth Art's decade of service to the community, thousands of low-income children and families benefited from earth-centered art experiences. In 1980, she discovered the world of Voiceweaving by listening to inner guides and exploring with friends. Since then she has developed this lovely, heart-filled Voice practice to honor joy, connection and spirit.
