Have you always dreamed of writing brilliant tales of urban intrigue for the New Yorker?  Now's your chance! In this class, award-winning fiction writer, Ben Loory will share his recipe for crafting an irresistible short story!  Through fun, in-class writing exercises and an engaging craft talk, he'll help you brainstorm new ideas, and write a draft of a Pulitzer prize winning gem.  He'll show you how to hook readers with an engaging premise and make your story feel complete in five pages or less. Experienced and beginning writers welcome.  Prepare to bring on your inner Salinger!

About Ben Loory:
Ben Loory's fables and tales have appeared online and in print in journals of all shapes and sizes, including Gargoyle Magazine, The Antioch Review, Pank, SmokeLong Quarterly, The Collagist, Fairy Tale Review, The Rattling Wall, and Quick Fiction. They have also been translated into many languages, including Arabic, Farsi, Japanese, and Indonesian. In 2010, his story "The TV" was featured in The New Yorker, and was named a Distinguished Story of the Year in The Best American Short Stories 2011. His stories "The Duck" and "The Man and the Moose" have appeared on NPR's This American Life, while "The Book" and "The Dodo" have been heard on Selected Shorts (with "The Dodo being written on a commission from the Selected Shorts Commissioning Project). "The Book" is also a staple at WordTheatre, where it has been performed by many actors, including Marcia Gay Harden. His book "Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day" (Penguin, 2011) is now in its fifth printing. It was chosen as a selection of the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Program and the Starbucks Coffee Bookish Reading Club, and was named one of the 10 Best Fiction Books of the Year by the Hudson Booksellers retail chain. It also won the Nobbie Award for Best Book of the Year, given by the online arts & culture magazine TheNervousBreakdown.com. As a screenwriter, Ben Loory has worked for Jodie Foster, Alex Proyas (director of Dark City and The Crow), and Mark Johnson (Academy Award-winning producer of Rain Man). He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts from Harvard University and an MFA in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute.
