Tár
Tár Rated R, 158 min Directed by Todd Field
Can you separate the art from the artist, and perhaps more importantly, should you? These questions that hang heavy over our modern life sit at the core of TÁR from writer/director Todd Field (LITTLE CHILDREN). This powerful story follows the fictional (though far too plausibly real) Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett, CAROL), a renowned conductor/composer at the height of her power, on the eve of the greatest performance of her career. As the big day approaches controversies from her past begin to mount, unraveling her life in a singularly modern way.
A searing portrait of power and influence in todays society, TÁR exquisitely examines our veneration of artists that are, as we like to say, a bit problematic. While the themes are heavy, theres joy to be found in the love for the art itself that is evident in the brilliant script. Cate Blanchett gives a transformative performance as a flawed (to put it lightly) master whose bill is finally coming due.
