The Elephant Man
This play follows the story of John Merrick, known to most of the world as The Elephant Man. It is based on the recounting by Sir Frederick Treves' The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences.
It is the story of a man whose physical form is so hideous, that he is looked upon as a freak and outcast, yet his spirit and faith in God causes most who know him to evaluate their own beliefs in society of the time. While John follows the rules and kindness that he finds in his faith and belief structure, his peers do not. This pushes the narrative to a beautifully melancholy and poignant conclusion.
The Elephant Man poses the question what the true definition of "beauty", and forces us to examine ourselves through the experiences of someone trying to live a civilized existence as defined by members of an often uncivilized society.
