Katja Sulc in Concert- CARICIAS
CARICIAS is the fourth album of charismatic Slovenian singer-songwriter, paying homage to Mexico and its poetry, featuring contemporary, folk and indigenous poems. Drawing from personal experience, ancient traditions and modern influences, Katja ulc is celebrating Mexico with an intimate self-portrait. Having spent a major part of the last decade in the country, she is dedicating an album to the land that has influenced her in so many ways, to transform into songs and stories everything that touched her in this incredible journey.
The first single Caricias / Caresses announced the album in Spring 2020. Featuring a poem written by Mexican poet Luna Nikol, the song mesmerizes the listener with a gentle, soothing soundscape while layering voice and ukulele loops. Nuu ti biaani / There is a light is based on a poem written by renowned indigenous poetess Irma Pineda. Delivered in Zapotec, the language of the cloud people, the song plays with a seductive melodic line and a joyful groove. Macochi Pitentzin / Sleep, my little child, a hypnotic rendition of Mexican lullaby in Nahuatl, is paying tribute to Día de Muertos, a celebration of the Day of the Dead. Cucurrucucu Paloma, a unique remake of traditional Mexican huapango, is captivating the listener with its subtle intimacy. Lagrimas negras de mi pluma triste / Black tears from my sorrowful quill, an emotional sonnet written by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Mexican nun and poet from the 17th century, is mourning and cherishing the experience and loss of a great love. The album was recorded in San Agustin Etla in Oaxaca in January 2020 and released at Druga godba festival in Ljubljana in May 2021.
