Science: Andrew Nikiforuk: 'Tar Sands'
Canada is the largest single exporter of oil to the United States thanks to its recent development of Northern Alberta's vast stores of bitumena.k.a "tar sands." Andrew Nikiforuk, a well-known Canadian journalist, believes that the Alberta tar-sands development may well be one of the worst environmental tragedies the world has never heard of. In Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Futures of a Continent, Nikiforuk describes the environmental degradation and social ills resulting from the pursuit of bitumen and examines the effect of petrodollars on democracy. Presented as part of the Seattle Science Lectures, with Pacific Science Center and University Book Store.
