Take home enough dough to make your own King Cake, plus you'll get decorations for the cake and a copy of the recipe.

Our instructor Paul McCool is an avid home baker who has baked for family and many friends for more than 35 years. He especially enjoys teaching others the art and the craft of breadmaking so that they can enjoy it within their homes and communities. Paul has taught classes in his home here in the U.S. & in South Africa.

A King Cake is an oval-shaped delicacy  a cross between a coffee cake and a French pastry that is rich in history as it is in flavor! The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870.    It is decorated in royal colors of Purple which signifies Justice, Green for Faith, and Gold for Power. These colors were chosen to represent a jeweled crown honoring the the Three Kings who brought gifts to the Christ Child on the Feast of the Epiphany. As a symbol of this holy day, a tiny plastic baby is placed inside each King Cake as a prize. In the past, things such as coins, beans, pecans or peas were hidden inside.  At a party, each person looks to see if their piece contains the baby. If so, then that person is named 'King for a day' and bound by custom to host the next party and provide the next King Cake!
