Hexham Orpheus Choir will be performing the Mozart Requiem and Rutter Gloria, in the magnificent Hexham Abbey under the direction of Mark Edwards. We welcome a wide audience from Tyneside, Northumberland, Newcastle and beyond to enjoy these uplifting works. The audience will be seated in the nave with reduced price restricted view seats in the side aisle.
Mozart worked on the requiem for just a few weeks in 1791, but died aged 35 before he had time to finish it. He only completed the Requiem and Kyrie movements, sketching just voice parts and bass lines from the Dies Irae to the Hostias. It was completed by his pupil, Süssmayer. We will be be accompanied by four wonderful soloists, the beautiful Phelps organ, a string quartet and timpani. John Rutter composed his Gloria in 1974 on a commission and was first performed in Omaha, Nebraska. The text is in three movements and scored for choir, brass, percussion and organ.
Hexham Orpheus Choir is dedicated to performing and promoting access to classical music in the Tyne Valley. Based in Hexham we have around 85 members and always welcome new singers - both experienced and inexperienced.
