Four Sundays in February Event #3
Mumbai in Massachusetts
February 16th 2 PM, Academy of Music General Admission: $15 Advance/$18 Door
An Afternoon of Indian Classical Music
Sponsored by Smith College
Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan was born in Mumbai, India and descends from six generations of renowned musicians. His early musical education was overseen by his father, Guru Ustad Aziz Khan, and began with training in voice and tabla. Parvez credits this early training in voice for the deep expressiveness of his sitar playing. During performances, Parvez's love for his instrument is palpable and he seems as surprised and transformed by his music as the audience feels listening to it. Parvez's intensive training has also made him a master of sitar technique. A leading exponent of the Etawah Gharana musical tradition, Parvez is a gifted teacher who conducts intensive sitar immersion weekends for students both in India and North America.
Parvez's appearance is reason enough to attend the Arts Council event, but the musicians who will be joining him make this a must see performance. Described by NPR as the "Jimi Hendrix of Hammered Dulcimer," Max ZT began his musical career rooted in traditional Irish folk music. He went on to expand the scope of his playing and composition to include the study of Mandinko technique in Senegal, and work with santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma in Mumbai. Kalyanpur has worked with noted musicians across genres, including Indian classical, jazz, and fusion. He is the founder of Boston's New England School of Music, which focuses on the teaching and promotion of Indian classical music.
It is truly exciting to imagine what will happen when five musicians of such vitality and inventiveness perform on stage together. For those interested in finding out, "Mumbai in Massachusetts" will be presented on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 PM, at the Academy of Music, Northampton, MA.
