Part 1: Dancing with Fear by Guillermo Gomez-Peña (with Saul Garcia Lopez & Esther Baker Tarpaga. Including a cameo by Sara Shelton Mann)
From the series: Twenty Ways of Dancing at 58. A new project by Guillermo Gomez-Peña, Saul Garcia Lopez and Esther Baker Tarpaga featuring spoken and dancing "choreographies" about the interactions and tensions between contemporary dance and performance art; the young and the aging body.
Twenty Ways of Dancing at 58 is a new performance series by Guillermo Gomez-Peña involving collaborators in the dance and performance worlds. The style of the piece is a combination of the artist's hard-edged conceptualism, embodied theory, Chicano humor, radical choreography, and wild robo-baroque aesthetics. An original video art piece is also being developed to accompany the live performance.
This first installment will premiere as a work in progress in January 2014 in San Francisco. For this version, titled "Dancing with Fear", Gomez-Peña has invited Mexico City-Toronto performance artist Saul Garcia-Lopez (core member of La Pocha Nostra) and radical choreographer Esther Baker-Tarpaga (from the Baker and Tarpaga Dance Project) to spend 10 days rehearsing at Galeria de la Raza and then presenting the premiere on January 25th.
Here is what Gomez-Peña has to say about the piece:
"Never in my life have I been so scared about the possibility of actually dancing, which is a very different language from my own performance language, especially considering that I am currently fighting the demons of age and illness. My objective isn't healing but rather to create a bridge between my present and an uncertain future, a future of change and permanent reinvention...I have worked with choreographers for many years, touring and performing with choreographers such as Sara Shelton-Mann, Michele Ceballos from Opendance, Marcela Levi (Brazil), Keith Hennessy and Lindsay Drury from Go-go Vertigo. Many dance collaborators have been challenging me to choreograph so in the past year I have started to develop my first dance piece in dialogue with 2 of my closest peers."
ONE-DAY WORKSHOP FOR DANCERS AND PERFORMERS: During the two-week residency, the three artists will lead a one-day master class for dancers interested in exploring the intersections between performance and contemporary dance on January 18th. Application information here:
