Free sessions are being offered by GenRyu Arts in partnership with the Japan Center Malls. These sessions will be held in San Francisco's Japan Town and will provide a way to continue to cultivate a connection with those who want to pursue Japanese Cultural Arts in music, and dance forms.
This class is to bring us together as a community to celebrate, and express the joy of playing taiko together. Kumi-Daiko has been around since the early 1950's through Osuwa Daiko and Sukeroku Daiko Kai. The word daiko and taiko are the same word. The placement of taiko after the name switches the sound. If spoken alone it is pronounced taiko.
In the kumi-daiko taiko tradition there is freedom to create as a group expression. Our classes are grounded in the Sukeroku forms and styles of playing. As a fourth generation Japanese I share this as part of my art practice of Japanese cultural arts but incorporate our group dynamic power. This and the other two cultural classes in shamisen/vocal, and odori will be later combined with the to create an expression of the minyo folk song, music, and dance together.
This is part of the SF Japantown Cultural Arts Now programing of taiko, odori, and music. Let's play!
