Sacco and Vanzetti
After Dinner Opera Company is set to present the New York premiere of Sacco and Vanzetti on Sept. 10 and 11, 2022.
The work, which was begun by Marc Blitzstein and completed by Leonard Lehrman (who will conduct), will be directed by Benjamin Spierman.
The work will star Christopher Remkus as Nicolo Sacco and Michael Niemann as Bartolomeo Vanzetti. They will be joined by David Aubrey, Elliet Rae Baltitas, Desiree Baxter, Sarah Blaze, Kevin Courtemanche, Jonathan Z. Harris, Karen Jolicoeur, Andrew Klima, Josh Minkin, Richard Risi, Perri Sussman, Christopher Tefft, Helene Williams, Henry Yen, and members of The Metropolitan Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra.
The performances, which also represent the orchestral stage premiere of the opera, will take place at the Lehman College Studio Theatre in The Bronx.
Blitzstein started the work in 1959 when he was commissioned by the Ford Foundation. He died in 1964, leaving the work unfinished. The opera tells the story of a shoemaker and fish peddler, both Italian immigrants, who were accused of murdering a guard and paymaster in South Braintree Massachusetts back in 1920.
