La Razón Blindada

Teatro del Pueblo in collaboration with The University of Minnesota, The College of St. Benedict /St. John's University Iberoamerican Studies Series presents "La Razón Blindada" by Teatro Malayerba from Quito, Ecuador. Award-winning Actor/Director/Writer, Arístides Vargas founded Teatro Malayerba in 1979 with immigrant artists' Susanna Pautasso and Charro Frances. Born in Argentina in 1954 Vargas was forced into exile after Argentina's bloody dictatorship in the 1970s and 80s. "La Razón Blindada" uses this time period as a backdrop for their witty and sublime display of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quijote de la Mancha. Two prisoners committed to solitary confinement in Rawson Prison are allowed one hour of interaction a week restricted to their chairs. During this time they entertain each other with stories of Don Quijote and his squire Sancho Panza utilizing accessible props and clever dialogue. This unique retelling of a familiar tale illustrates how the power of imagination can lift a person out of physically limiting and repressive conditions.
