LA ESCENA, Los Angeles' first festival of Hispanic classical theater, will be back September 12-18, 2022. The third edition of Diversifying the Classics' biennial festival will kick off with a streamed online reading from New York's Red Bull Theater and continue with a weekend of free live performances on the UCLA campus.

This year's festival includes two productions by internationally recognized theater companies visiting from Spain: Nao d'Amores will perform NUMANCIA by Miguel de Cervantes, and Colectivo Állatok will present Lope de Vega's EL ANIMAL DE HUNGRÍA (both performances in Spanish, with English translations provided).

Three brand-new adaptations of Hispanic classics by Los Angeles playwrights, the latest edition of Diversifying the Classics' long-running Golden Tongues series, will have staged readings: Amanda L. Andrei's YOUR HOME IN ME AS I IN YOU, based on Lope's "El animal de Hungría"; Lina Patel's version of "The Widow of Valencia," also by Lope, called TRACES OF DESIRE; and FLORENCE AND NORMANDIE, June Carryl's take on "To Love Beyond Death" by Calderón de la Barca.

Audiences will also get the chance to see a staged reading of another new adaptation by University of Virginia professor, director, and translator Dave Dalton: FORCES OF NATURE, based on Guillén de Castro's "The Force of Habit", from the recent English translation by Diversifying the Classics.

Festival-goers interested in fun for the whole family will enjoy Dragoncillo Puppet Troupe's show for all ages, FOOL-ITOS, making early-modern Spanish culture come alive with puppets and clever jokes, along with Renaissance and Baroque music from Spain and Latin America by the UCLA Early Modern Ensemble.

Performances at UCLA will take place Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18, all free to the public with reservations on Brown Paper Tickets. Performances will be in the Little Theater and Black Box Theater at MacGowan Hall. Paid parking is available on campus (nearest lot is Structure 3).

The online event series focused on Lope's THE CAPULETS AND THE MONTAGUES will be hosted by New York's Red Bull Theater, in collaboration with Diversifying the Classics. For more information and tickets to the streamed reading and interactive discussions, visit:  redbulltheater.com/hispanic-golden-age-classics-lope-de-vega

NOTE: Masks will be required at all in-person performances.
