Slaying Goliath
Sunday, March 8 at 2:30pm In Person: Directors Joe Brewster & Michelle Stephenson $9 Members / $12 Public / Includes Reception
This film explores the impact of competitive team sports on a group of ten and eleven year-old boys on a Harlem boys basketball team. The film raises the question of the expectations of what we as parents and a community may have for our children. Who is this game for anyway? what does winning mean? One problem is the authoritarian hard driving coach and father figure for whom winning is everything. The film follows the team as it travels to Florida to compete in the prestigious AAU national basketball championship. The filmmakers as parents experienced this first hand since their son was on the team. USA, 2008, 70 min.
