Performance: William Kentridge: I am not me, the horse is not mine
"I am not me, the horse is not mine" takes as a starting point Nikolai Gogol's absurdist short story The Nose (1837), and emerged as part of William Kentridge's process of developing his production of Dimitri Shostakovich's opera The Nose (1930), commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York for the 2010 season. The work reflects Kentridge's ongoing interest in the roots and trajectory of modernism: a mixture of the absurd, the self-reflective (and the 'self-divided'). The performance addresses the fragmentation associated with modernism, its crushing in Russia in the 1930s, and the long-term trajectory of the terrors of hierarchy.
This performance complements the Henry exhibition William Kentridge, on view through May 3, 2009. http://henryart.org/exhibitions/show/1097
The lecture combines live performance with projection, and is about 40 minutes in duration.
