Tahoe Youth Ballet 6th Annual Winter Season
Tahoe Youth Ballet's Sixth Season celebrates both collaboration and diversity. The program will feature Maurya Kerr's San Francisco - based dance company, tinypistol; a new work for the Company by founding Artistic Director Christin Hanna in collaboration with New Chamber Ballet's Miro Magloire, and a revival by Constantine Baecher.
The program opens with a new work for the Company to selections of Niccolò Paganini's Caprices for Solo Violin. A collaboration between Hanna and Magloire, the piece comprises a series of classical yet contemporary dances for company dancers Maia Baehr, Sierra Bertini, Piper Joubert, Marissa Kamenetsky, Haley Perkins, Kyla Pierce, Annie Thompson and Kaylee Ward. Hanna danced for Miro's company, New Chamber Ballet in New York City from 2003 to 2008; this is their first choreographic collaboration.
The program also includes the return of Viduity, to the music of Leoš Janáček, with choreography by frequent collaborator Constantine Baecher. Originally created on Hanna during her time at New Chamber Ballet, she staged it for Tahoe Youth Ballet in 2010. The title, meaning widowhood, lends itself to the theatrically emotional side of this work, an exploration of a community in mourning that the New York Times called "... a sophisticated, moving meditation on grief" after the ballet's premiere in 2007.
Dancer turned choreographer Maurya Kerr brings per company, tinypistol, to perform the final work in the program, brutalisms, loosely based on Angela Carter's short story "The Tiger's Bride." Kerr describes the work as her "animalist and feminist" revision of Beauty and the Beast. Maurya Kerr danced with Alonzo King's LINES Ballet for twelve years, prior to forming tinypistol in 2010. She is a winner of the 2011 Hubbard Street National Choreographic Competition, and has presented works in the Aspen Fringe Festival, WestWave Dance Festival, and REVERBdance Festival.
A special post-performance Gala Reception to support he Company's ongoing performances and programs will follow the Friday performance. The Reception includes the opportunity to meet guest artists and Company members; delicious light fare, including wine, and a raffle for great prizes provided by local businesses.
