LULA WASHINGTON DANCE THEATRE 2022 AUGUST QUARTERLY - Urban Gospel Celebration!
Join us for our 2022 August Quarterly/Urban Gospel Celebration - Faith and Resilience, a Fund and Friend Raiser for the Lula Washington Dance Theatre to help sustain its on-going programs. The Celebration will feature Gospel music, dance and spoken word from the Lula Washington Dance Theatre and guest artists. The Lula Washington Dance Theatre was introduced to the August Quarterly by one of its Board members who is from Delaware. We have embraced and adopted the celebration as a way to resonate strong positive energy out into our community which is healing from a myriad of traumas. The August Quarterly creates space for healing and acknowledgment of community and world trauma and it ignites the spirit, building strength and resilience for the future. With this in mind we ask that our audiences plan to wear ALL WHITE to symbolize peace, unity and healing.
The August Quarterly was started 1814 by Peter Spencer, in Wilmington, Delaware and became a kind of Independence Day for Black people on the Delmarva Peninsula. In the early years of the festival abolitionists and Underground Railroad conductors of the stature of Thomas Garrett and Harriet Tubman were active participants. The August Quarterly has remained a time of reunion, religious revival and celebration of freedom for the people in and around Wilmington, Delaware. It is said that the festival celebrated freedom of religion, freedom to gather and freedom of speech.
