PHILLY-SHOT XXX DOUBLE-FEATURE AT PHILAMOCA
The 1970s Golden Age of XXX Adult Cinema...Shot in Philadelphia! Digitally Restored Screenings of Al Goldstein's SOS: SCREW ON THE SCREEN and co-feature THE EROTIC MEMOIRS OF A MALE CHAUVINIST PIG!
The early 1970s through the mid 80s are often considered the Golden Age of American hardcore porn films, as producers were taking the lead of the Porno Chic phenomenon initiated by DEEP THROAT, and crafting features that were shot on film, contained actual storylines, and often dealt with transgressive subject matter that would never be touched today. Two DVD/Blu-ray labels, Distribpix and Vinegar Syndrome, have been leading the way in restoring these XXX landmarks to their original glory, and PhilaMOCA and Danger After Dark are pleased to be collaborating with them to present a double feature of two digitally restored classics of 70s sex sinema, the late Al Goldstein's SOS: SCREW ON THE SCREEN (1975) and Ray Horsch's THE EROTIC MEMOIRS OF A MALE CHAUVINIST PIG (1973). And these two have something else in common: they were both shot on the sleazy streets of Filthadelphia...er, we mean, Philadelphia!
Al Goldstein just passed away, and while he was best known for the porn empire that surrounded his infamous adult publication "Screw" in the 70s (and his cable program "Midnight Blue"), he also made an attempt to adapt the magazine into a sketch comedy feature with the outrageous SOS: SCREW ON THE SCREEN, co-written by and occasionally starring Goldstein himself, and directed by "Screw" co-founder Jim Buckley (who would also produce the DEBBIE DOES DALLAS series). With skits involving a "Tonight Show" parody, genital tattoos, oral sex technique instructions, actual stag reel clips from the 50s, a surprising (and explicit) sexual encounter between two men, and Goldstein's own porn industry reviews, SOS would seem to be the hardcore equivalent to such 70s sketch comedy anthologies as THE GROOVE TUBE, although it actually comes off more like a burlesque-revue-meets-Borscht-Belt sex omnibus from a different era. But the highlight finds the production leaving New York and going on location to visit Philly's long-gone "Locust Strip Cinema" to film the act of performer Honeysuckle Divine, who blows out matches, and performs other tricks with her...um, maybe you should just see for yourself.
A darker and more character-driven type of comedy is found in THE EROTIC MEMOIRS OF A MALE CHAUVINIST PIG, shot entirely in Philly by native Ray Horsch and bankrolled by late South Philly Sicilian businessman (and Little Nicky Scarfo cohort) Salvatore ``Sam the Barber'' LaRussa. EROTIC MEMOIRS consists of the recollections of Barney, the triple-divorced narcissistic misogynist of the film's title, as he recounts his sexual exploits into a tape recorder. Bored with his masochistic current wife (DEVIL IN MISS JONES star Georgina Spelvin), Barney finds himself involved in a series of bizarre trysts with strippers, schoolgirls, and wives of friends, but he's unable to find satisfaction. An offbeat, imaginative, and often shocking character study that could only have been made in the hardcore industry of the 70s, EROTIC MEMOIRS also contains scenes of confrontational content typical to XXX films of this early period -- S&M, rape fantasies, bloodletting, and other things best not mentioned in print -- so sensitive viewers should be cautioned. Horsch was a notable figure in adult cinema, although his name might be more locally recognizable for less glamorous reasons, as he was recently released from federal prison for pot charges in Bucks County (news story here: http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=6930702).
Distribpix and Vinegar Syndrome have spent years digitally restoring these two taboo-busting 70s porn hits, and we are proud to unleash them back on the Philly streets where they were shot four decades ago!
