The Importance of Advocacy & Engagement in the Political Process ... Why it Matters!

Dave Bender, ACEC Vice President - Political Affairs

In agriculture, the weather has the greatest impact on the production of your product. In all other areas including engineering, nothing impacts business more that Government Intervention. It is crucial for engineering firms, their principals and employees to have some level of engagement in the political process of Government. Dave will provide options of engagement, what best fits your interest and why it matters.

BIO: Dave Bender joined ACEC National in 2019 as the VP of Political Affairs. He previously served as President & CEO of ACEC-Illinois for 7 years, representing 210 firms with 12,000 employees, during which time he traveled the entire state meeting with all 210 firms in-person. He chaired the Transportation for Illinois Coalition (TFIC), a 60-member business/labor coalition which successfully passed the 1st major transportation funding increase in 29 years in early 2019. Like California, Illinois is not the most business-friendly state. Thanks to a great team of volunteer leaders and Dave's political experience, they successfully fought off every piece of bad legislation that would have profoundly changed the business of engineering in Illinois.

Dave has over 23 years of association management experience and served as the Assistant Secretary of the Illinois Department of Agriculture from 1995-1999. He also served as the Deputy campaign manager for former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar's historic 36-point reelection victory in 1994. Dave has chaired or advised on 43 national, state and local political campaigns.

Dave commutes back-and-forth weekly from his Illinois home to Washington, DC. He is married to Carla Bender, the Illinois Appellate Court Clerk, and they have 2 grown children.
