Concert IV: David's League
Australian cellist Clancy Newman returns to the PNC Recital Hall after his sensational debut last year to perform Chopins elegiac Sonata for Cello and Piano with David Allen Wehr. Besides the piano, the cello was Chopins favorite instrument, and the composer revels in the instruments rich sonorities, finding a constant stream of imaginative ways to combine and contrast the cello with the piano. Schumann created the imaginary League of David as a vehicle to oppose the musical Philistines who fought acceptance of the new and innovative ideas espoused by Schumann and his cohort of young firebrands. The musical result is a suite of 18 short and inspired piano pieces displaying the inward and extroverted sides of the composers personality and also, incidentally, a musical love letter to Clara.
