Concert II: Quintet
Schumann created his piano quintet as a gift for his wife, the great pianist Clara Schumann (née Wieck), and his conception of the piano and the string quartet as equal, yet opposing bodies, set the stage for the great quintets of Brahms, Dvoák, and Franck to come. Its brilliance, freshness, and inspiration have never faded with familiarity, although live performances are not easy to come by. Members of Duquesnes string faculty and David Allen Wehr team up for this perennial favorite. Wehr offers a bouquet of some of Chopins most elegant and personal works, culminating in the virtuosic energy of the Heroic Polonaise, with its powerful expression of Polish patriotism in the face of oppression.
