Concert I: Carnaval
Schumann's Carnaval is a foundational work of the Romantic piano repertoire and has been a specialty of guest artist Cynthia Raim. A mosaic of 21 short pieces, it combines musical portraits of real and imagined personalities, clowns from classic Italian commedia dell'arte, swirling dances, and lots of affectionate humor. David Allen Wehr will perform all 21 Chopin Nocturnes over the course of the series, and he begins this journey with three of the most popular and tuneful, along with the dramatic and impetuous Scherzo #3. Raim and Wehr join forces for Chopin's Rondo and Schumann's Canonic Etudes, transcribed by Claude Debussy, a touching and heartfelt tribute to J. S. Bach.
