Harnessing the Brain -- The Future of Cognitive Neuroscience - Dr. Laura Cacciamani
Tuesday, August 9, 2022 1:00pm - 3:00pm SLO Senior Center, Assembly Hall
Gone are the days of simply looking at brain activity using fMRIs.
At a time when many young scientists find themselves working in areas that are overcrowded and under-funded, the fast-emerging field of cognitive neuroscience offers a bracing contrast. The field these days is about as hot as they get, not least because it offers a very real chance to solve one of the most fundamental mysteries of science: how the mind arises from the brain.
The latest research in cognitive neuroscience seeks to understand the brain in new, advanced ways, such as through brain stimulation, neural mind reading, and even brain-computer interfaces. But what does this mean for the future? How can we harness what we know about the brain to improve lives? What about ethical considerations?
This talk will explore the present and future of cognitive neuroscience and what to expect with new and improved brain 2.0.
Dr Cacciamani is in Department of Psychology & Child Development at California Polytechnic State University. Her research focuses on multisensory perception and memory (in other words, how we understand the world around us through our senses), using cognitive neuroscience methods such as fMRI and neurostimulation. After receiving her PhD, she had a postdoctoral fellowship at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco where she explored the neural underpinnings of tactile perception in the blind and visually impaired using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)

By purchasing a ticket to an LLCC event at any venue, event attendee assumes all risks associated with entering a place of public gathering and voluntarily waives any and all claims and potential claims against Lifelong Learners of the Central Coast relating to Covid-19 or any other communicable disease, or that arise from or relate in any way to, however caused, the risk of exposure or actual or alleged exposures to a bacteria, virus or other pathogen capable of causing Covid-19 or any other communicable disease or illness, in each case whether the actual or alleged circumstances gives rise to any claim or potential claim before, during or after the event.
All courses or classes are subject to rescheduling and cancellation. The safety and well-being of all our members, other course attendees, and volunteers is very important to LLCC, and we thank you for your understanding. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you in class!
Attendance Policies
Course attendees will present a government-issued ID such as a passport or driver's license and proof of a full vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the date of a class. Attendees must show a record of a booster dose of vaccine if the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine (or the single shot from J&J) was taken more than nine months before the day of the class. Attendees who need a reasonable accommodation due to a medical condition or deeply held religious belief must provide proof of a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the class date.
All attendees and volunteers are encouraged to wear masks (covering their nose and mouth) in all areas of all venues used by LLCC and throughout the class. Please stay home if you are feeling ill.
