The Avian Fighter Pilots of Morro Rock -- Ed Cobleigh
Tuesday, August 15, 2022 10:30am - 12:30pm SLO Library Community Room
With wings, eyes, and nostrils built for their signature high-speed dives from above, peregrine falcons are like feathered fighter jets. Their notched beak and sharp claws complete their raptor credentials Ed Cobleigh has been watching the peregrine falcons who live near Morro Rock. In researching a book, he discovered there was a wide-spread lack of knowledge about how falcons actually fly and perform their high-speed predation. He decided to fill in this gap, drawing on his background as a fighter weapons instructor. How have falcons evolved to adapt to speeds over 200 mph? What aerial maneuvers do they employ to take prey? How similar are the in-flight tactics of these falcons and pilots in fighter planes?
Attend this class and you will have gained a greater appreciation of Peregrine Falcons, their capabilities, and how those skills correspond to those of human aviators. Many photos will be on view.
Ed Cobleigh has been a fighter pilot with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, Royal Air Force, and French Air Force. After his flying career, he was an Air Intelligence Officer, working with the CIA, FBI, and MI6. He has visited 50 countries and France 50 times.. His first book, War for the Hell of It, was an Amazon bestseller.
