CARDENIO - Shakespeare's 'Lost Play' re-imagined
A woman seduced and a friend betrayed; desire, deceit and disguise in the heat and dust of Andalucia
Cardenio is madly in love with his childhood sweetheart Luscinda; while his friend Don Fernando, the Duke's son, is determined to seduce Dorotea, a virtuous farmer's daughter. No sooner has the flaky Fernando succeeded with Dorotea, than he becomes smitten with Cardenio's love Luscinda, and deceitfully arranges to marry her.
In the true spirit of romantic comedy, all ends well But only with the aid of some sketchy shepherds, fake friars and an extremely obliging Grandee of Spain...
Its plot based on an episode in Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes' comic masterpiece, Cardenio is a 're-imagining' by the Royal Shakespeare Company of a play first performed in 1612, co-written by William Shakespeare and fellow-playwright John Fletcher. When first performed at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 2011 Cardenio's romance, Spanish grandeur and comedy made it a huge success and we are thrilled to stage its US premiere.
