JASNA NorCal July Reading Group
The NorCal chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America is excited to host a youth-focused discussion of Jane Austens Sense and Sensibility. Austen may have been as young as nineteen when she wrote the novel; both of its heroines are teenagers; and many of her first readers were as well. In other words, this is a novel by, about, and for the young and this event for high schoolers in the Bay Area and beyond embraces that focus.
While deeply rooted in its time, the themes of Sense and Sensibility are no less relevant today. At its center are two young women, raised in relative security and prosperity, who suddenly have to grapple with the world on their own. As they make that transition, they must balance youthful dreams and ideals with the harsh demands of adult life all without sacrificing their core values.
JASNAs discussion of the novel, open to high-schoolers across the country, will be held on Zoom and jointly hosted by Ben Wiebracht, an English teacher at Stanford Online High School and a specialist in nineteenth-century literature, and Vandana Ravi, a student at Gunn High School. Brew yourself a cup of tea, and join us for an exciting evening with Austen!
