2nd Annual Community Oyster Roast
The Oyster Roast, based on the popular roll-up-your-sleeves southern tradition, features sacks of fresh Taylor oysters in the shell dumped on hot metal plates over outdoor grills and covered with wet coffee sacks until juice starts to bubble out of the shells. Then they are shoveled onto platters and delivered to tables where they need a nudge from an oyster knife to release the top shell and seductive aromas. Empty shells are discarded into buckets at the ends of the tables. Sausages and side dishes are served family style.
The cancellation of Anthonys Oyster Olympics left a vacuum in the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance budget, in the NW oyster culture and in a way to get the clean water message to the public. The Oyster Roast is an opportunity to celebrate the Oyster, one of the premier local products. Why an Oyster Roast? Oyster Roasts have long been popular fundraisers and social get-togethers in the Southeast. It is time we imported this idea to the Northwest. In the Southeast, oyster roasts, large and small, are popular club fundraisers and social get-togethers, says Taylor. We have the oysters here. Why not have the fun?
