Attraction/Logic - A Performance Event.
Continuing in its mission to explore fresh, thought-provoking approaches to artistic expression, Theatre Unleashed is proud to present Attraction/Logic, a performance event on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19, 8 p.m. at the NoHo Art Gallery in North Hollywood.
A "show" like no other, Attraction/Logic will bring together artists from a number of fields (actors, writers, painters, singers, dancers, musicians and even scientists) to explore the question: "Where do Attraction and Logic intersect in our brains and bodies?" This eclectic bunch will present what they discovered through music, dance, theatre pieces, art installations, performance art and "human experimentation," weaving together stories of love, loss and anything and everything in between.
"This really started as a one-woman show, a chance for me to explore my own nagging questions related to relationships, like why I made the same mistakes over and over again, when do I decide is the right time to pursue someone I'm interested in, and so on," said Negin Singh, creator and director of Attraction/Logic. "Then I found I wanted to compare my findings and stories with others. Luckily, I found a collection of artists who all hungered for the same thing: An authentic experience. Since then, the process has been nothing less than soul-shaking."
Singh, along with her co-creator Jack De Sena, collected 15 artists, meeting with them twice a week for several months to discuss and debate both Attraction and Logic through a series of specific topics (i.e. virginity, commitment, addiction, etc.). These artists would then move to "lab" work, creating and sharing pieces inspired by the conversations. With no rules or restrictions, these unique artists were encouraged to step outside their comfort zone, take chances and make mistakes. The lab ended up producing about 60 pieces, which Singh and De Sena narrowed down and wove together into a thrilling "performance event."
"These artists have created some unbelievably relevant, vulnerable and brave pieces that we hope shed some light on the subject," said Sarah Cook, a producer and artist. "If not, we certainly gained some clarity ourselves."
This is Singh's second show with Theatre Unleashed, having directed a piece for the popular Coffee Shop Series Through a Caffeine Haze last season. She is also no stranger to innovative theatre. Her show Slow Through Eden featured an ensemble performing an original piece about homophobia in the living rooms of homes throughout Southern California. She also created A Quiet Night of Chaos in which audience members were given a midnight tour of the University of California-Irvine, witnessing original performance art pieces at various stops. Attraction/Logic is the first of a series of Art Gallery shows Theatre Unleashed plans to present throughout the 2009 season. "I am so excited to share our findings on Attraction and Logic with Los Angeles," Negin said. "More importantly, I am excited to present an ensemble of up-and-coming, thrilling and most of all, honest artists who are ready to play."
