First Sundays Concerts - Seattle Marimba Quartet
The Seattle Marimba Quartet is a Percussion Quartet that was formed in 2007 by members Christian Krehbiel, Chris Lennard, Craig Wende and Brian Yarkosky who all met while earning music degrees at the University of Washington. The members of SMQ are each accomplished musicians in their own right, and together they form an incredibly versatile chamber group. The ensemble has performed throughout the Seattle area and beyond in concerts, master classes, and festivals. SMQ strives to engage audiences with their unique blend of drumming styles from around the world, as well as modern marimba repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries. SMQ's showcase of the diversity of percussion makes for an interesting and entertaining concert experience. The group aims to link together the diversity of percussion in all of their performances, stemming from the knowledge of each of the groups members. Based in the traditions of classical and jazz music, the ensemble also has a unique blend of African, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music. Both as a group and as individual members, SMQ's educational series of master classes and clinics has been highly successful for students of all ages. The series is based on an assortment of percussion with a very hands on approach to the instruments themselves. SMQ strives to create an opportunity for audiences to experience firsthand the diversity in small group and chamber works in both the traditional and modern percussion literature.
