AMERICAN PROMISE
Education, race and class all collide in this powerful new documentary in which African-American filmmakers Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson explore what happens to their family after they enroll their son in the posh and mostly white Dalton School
In 1999, African-American Brooklynites Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson enrolled their 5-year-old son Idris in the posh and private Dalton School in the Upper East Side. Following Idris, his best friend, and the boys' families over twelve years, the film captures their struggles with stereotypes and identity, learning differences and their increasingly divergent paths on the road to graduation. As their sons grow into young men, the parents wrestle with their own doubts and fears in this rare and vivid portrait of middle-class African-American families.
